Formal proposal for documentary

TOPIC: Documenting the journey of an upcoming local band, with the question of will they ever make it into the music industry

TYPE OF DOCUMENTARY: We have decided our documentary will be mixed. A combination of interviews, observation and a voice over. We think this type will be the best option as this is the most modern way to document and will be able to create emotive, relative content. Also, from our research, we find a mixed documentary will fit our topic well as it will contain multiple codes and conventions of different types of documentaries.

STYLE: We feel to fit into the content and target audience, the style will be modern, humorous, exiting, modern yet realistic and relative. The documentary will be very modern music led, so the genre of the music will have a big impact of the style being youthful. This is exposing the journey of the K's, so it will show the ups and the downs, the truth, which could bring through emotion, humour, joy or regret. The fact that our documentary is based on peoples real lives brings attachment value, emotive for the audience, exposing the truth, relative and realistic content.
Their will be a balance of excitement, fun and humour with realism and relative content, to show the true band with the bad times as well as the good but still expose enthusiasm for the audience.

CHANNEL AND SCHEDULING:The channel that we have chose our documentary to be broadcast on is BBC Three at 9:00pm. We chose this channel and time because with our primary research we found that our target audience watch BBC Three around this time. We find the evening time will be appropriate to our 16-22 age range as the content could be issued as inappropriate to anyone younger.  We have found have a great foundation of documentaries for our target audience, and are well know for their respectable and revealing content.

TARGET AUDIENCE:Our target audience is teenagers and young adults, we chose this age group as everyone in our group that is going to produce the documentary is around this age and it would be unproblematic for us to know what will be enjoyable for our age. The band we feature is at a similar age group also, so they can relate to the content better than people younger or older. Also we prodomantly asked this age group in our primary research, and base the answers around the making of our documentary, so a lot of what they prefer will be added into our documentary.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE: At the beginning we will attract and hook the viewers so that they will continue to watch the rest of the documentary. We will do this by a montage of the band playing, rehearsing, meeting managers, touring and also the crowd. This will be constructed using fast pace editing and the shots will be abstract with the use of lights and angling of shots. This is to connect to the genre of music featured, and connect the to right target audience immediately. The fast montage will straight away inform the audience of what the documentary is about through the content of the clips. This will end of a shot of the band wallking on stage with the digetic sound with the crowd shouting 'The K's are on fire'.

In the middle to keep the audience entertained, it will consist inform the audience about the band as inderviduals, their journey to prepare for their big gig and their past and present struggles to make it in the industy. To relevently tell the audinece about their jounrey, we will follow them to gigs, to meetings and on the road. Showing their step backs and struggles will create a sort of relevent conflict, to keep the balance of the argument (will they or wont they) and the entertainment value. Givnig the audinece a more deeper behind the scenes insight and a view on them as inderviduals will create a personal bond between the audience and the band, which will create an emotive attachment. It will contain invterviews with the band, managers, club owners, fans and the general public to get a wide audicne perspective on this persific bands and bands as a whole and give a more indepth analogy of the documnetary question.

Thw whole of our documentary is based and a leed up to the end result. Throughout, the band is preparing for their big gig in Manchester and we are documenting this journey. At the end of the half an hour, this is where the gig will happen. Adding suspense all the may through with emotive content and attachment value, this end gig we feel that the audience will feel satified as they have grown to know and pertentiously want the band to do well. This is give an answer the the on going question, will they or wont they and hopefully answer part of this. At the end of the big, we will introduce a vox pox of asking people do they think the K's can make it big to make the audience think of thier personal answer. We feel that we have started the documnetary with a small gig and ending it on a larger one creates a well rounded cycle of conclution and visually represent their growth.

OUTLINE OF CONTENT:The content that will be in our documentary will be a range of interviews from the public regarding the topic of the K's, what is their oppinion of them (both sides). We will also interview the bands manager, club owners and people who know the band personally. This is to create a more indepth knowlege of the band and question their talent withother peoples views to make it more real. We will also have footage of the bands journey literally, in the car going to gigs, them rehersing in their drum room as well as footage of them playing in a club/pub. This will give the audinece an insight of what bands have to go through, keeping them interested and entertained. We will use archive footage such as tv adds for the clubs they play in, bands they inspire to be to show their success and visually communicate what the strive to achieve.

RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS:The resourses that we will need to film our documentary is a good quality camera. This will shoot the footage that we will edit together and if we have a high quality camera our documentary will look more professional. We will also need a microphone that the interviewee will wear on their clothing so that the camera will be able to pick up their answers more efficiently without picking up much excess background noise. If we didn’t have this microphone it may become very hard for the interviewee to be heard during the documentary. We also need a boom mike to capture high quality sound of the band playing life as we could use clip on mikes as they will be moving and capture only one band member playing. We should also get hold of a tripod. This will help keep the camera steady when we are shooting footage and will prevent any shakiness that we will get if we hand held the camera. The last thing that we will need is adobe premiere. This is the programme that we are going to be using to edit our footage. By making use of all the tools that are on this programme we should be able to put together a very professional looking documentary.
